Sarasota National Cemetery Will Be New Model To Follow

Sarasota National Cemetery

While it isn’t obvious at this point in time by looking at the largely untouched 295 acres of former ranchland off of Clark Road, also known as State Road 72, over the course of the next couple of years this site is going to go through a huge building and transformation process which will result in a “showplace” if one can refer to a cemetery that way.  It seems fitting that our veterans should be honored with nothing less!  This is thanks to a group of local philanthropists who are going to see that millions of dollars are spent in making this what will become the model for other national cemeteries in the country.  One of the most intriguing features will be the massive amphitheater available for special events able to seat up to 2500 guests.  Also in the plan will be a wonderful art element including sculptures, statues and mosaics onto the hallowed grounds.

BarLympics Event Starts

BarLympics Event Starts

Let the games begin! For the entire months of August and September there will be a wide variety of sporting and eating contests being held all over Sarasota.  In fact, 30 different bars will participate in this fun and sometimes crazy 60-day event.  You might ask yourself what is the purpose in this event?  The proceeds from this will go to benefit H.I.S.K.I.D.S., Inc., a nonprofit organization that helps families who are dealing with childhood cancer.  So…..step up and buy what is called a “Happy Hour Joker Card” for a mere $30 and you now have your pass to go, at your convenience, to any of the 30 participating bars to play the game they have selected (cornhole, or toss rings or darts or pool or on and on).  Your scores will be recorded and a grand tally will be recorded by the Beks Group, the organizer of the event.  Over the course of the 60 days you can check online to see how you are doing compared to others.  Prizes will be awarded at the end to top winners.  The truth is, however, everyone is a winner.  Folks will have visited new places and met new people.  Bar owners will have had seen their profits increase. And most important, a great cause will have been helped.
